SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The city of Sullivan broke ground on a $14,000,000 housing project Friday afternoon.

Sullivan mayor J.D. Wilson called Friday “historic” and said that a project of this magnitude will propel the city of Sullivan to new heights.

“It is going to impact the city in multiple ways that we are just so proud of,” he said. “This is a special day, and we are excited for this this kind of investment in our community, and this is just the beginning and stay tuned for more.”

This project, which will allow the city to build nearly 40 new homes, is thanks to several partners. First the city got $12,000,000 in tax credits from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and an additional $800,000 from READI.

Board member for the Wabash River Regional Development Authority Jim Exline said that this has always been a goal for the city.

“We made it our mission to improve the housing so that people will want to retire here, live here, or have young families here,” Exline said.

Exline says that the constant support from all involved was the driving force of this project.

“It is great to see the turnout here and all the partners show appreciation to a small town in southern Indiana,” he added.

Mayor Wilson said that they are going to be starting on these houses very soon and hope to have them finished in about a year.
