Parents thought their four-year-old daughter had a common cold, but she tragically passed away days later after falling into a coma .
Patric Schmidt, from Strongsville, Ohio , took his little girl Maisie to the doctor's office when she developed a cough and blocked nose. They were told it wasn't serious and took her home. But just days later, the loving child sadly died after suffering a stroke and being put on life support due to a virus, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her uncle Mike Brigadier.
"We got told it was just a common cold, just take her home, lots of fluids, and things of that nature," the dad told Cleveland 19 before his daughter's tragic passing. By Saturday, her symptoms had worsened.
The parents rushed her to an emergency room and then to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. There, medical professionals had to put Maisie into a medically induced coma.
"It's not what you expect," Patric said. "We just thought it was a common cold and that we'd be taking her home the same day [and] never thought we'd be down here.", reports the Mirror .
Following a test on Monday, doctors had discovered that the four-year-old had suffered a stroke. The dad explained: "She went in for a CT scan. They said that there was some bleeding on the brain, so they wanted to get a scan of that and in the process of doing so they found that she actually had a very large stroke on the right side of her brain."
The swelling in her brain had become so severe that part of it had to be removed in an attempt to save her life, Patric said. "She is one of the most lovable people that you'll ever meet," he added. "She's so smart and so willing to help anyone and she wants everyone to love her just like she loves everyone else."
Maisie was expected to stay hooked up to life support machines and stay in a medical-induced coma for "several months", according to a post on a GoFundMe campaign set up to support the family.
Now, in a tragic update on the campaign page on Tuesday morning, Maisie's uncle announced that the little girl had passed away. "I wish I could deliver a happy ending to this story," wrote Mike.
"I wish I knew the right words to say to ease my loved ones pains and all those who were touched by Maisie. Around 11am today Maisie passed away. For those of you who were blessed by knowing Maisie you would know how caring, smart, fun and loving she was. She exhibited the best traits you could ask for out of a person."
The family thanked everyone for their love, support and donations during this tough time.
