    UConn basketball legend Maya Moore to be one of this year’s commencement speakers

    STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) – A University of Connecticut basketball legend will impart her wisdom on 2024 graduates during UConn’s commencement ceremonies this May.

    2011 UConn Alum Maya Moore Irons is listed to speak at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ceremony at 6 p.m. on May 5, at Gampel Pavilion.

    Moore recently added “inductee to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame” to her long list of accomplishments, which includes author, two-time Olympic gold medalist, advocate for social justice, and decorated college and WNBA athlete.

    When she played for UConn, the women’s basketball team earned back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. Moore was selected twice as the Naismith College Player of the Year and became the third active player to be added to the Huskies of Honor.

    While playing in the WNBA, she’s won four championships, six all-star selections, and was once named WNBA Most Valuable Player.

    She took a break from basketball to tackle advocacy of criminal justice reform and help grant the release of wrongfully-convicted Jonathan Irons from a Missouri prison. She also founded an advocacy group called Win With Justice.

    Other 2024 commencement speakers include UConn President Radenka Maric; Ramani Durvasula, a clinical psychologist and author; Connecticut Teacher of the Year Kiana Foster-Mauro; and Chief Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba, the first woman chief of the Mohegan Tribe in modern history.
