GBI Leads Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Timothy Hunt in Lanier County, Calls for Public Assistance
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the reins in the case of Timothy Hunt, a 27-year-old man from Naylor, Georgia, who suffered a fatal gunshot in Lanier County. Hunt’s life came to an abrupt end at a residence on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Lakeland, on June 2, prompting local law enforcement to seek assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. As reported by Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a medical examiner is scheduled to conduct an autopsy to uncover more about the events leading to Hunt’s death.
VSU president to serve as Gulf South Conference Chair
VALDOSTA – Valdosta State University president has been elected to serve a two-year term as Gulf South Conference Chair. Valdosta State University President Dr. Richard Carvajal has been elected to serve as president of the Gulf South Conference Executive Committee and chair of the GSC Board of Directors effective July 1, 2024. He will hold the position for two years, after previously serving as conference vice president and vice chair.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A nice and pleasant weekend weatherwise is in progress over South Georgia, with just some passing high clouds courtesy of upstream thunderstorm complexes in the Mid-South. With the dry air mass in place, however, the air has been able to both cool and warm very efficiently. Low temperatures have been pleasant with widespread 60s this morning and even a few upper 50s in the more sheltered rural locations throughout the region, but once the June sun goes to work, we’ve seen temperatures in the low to mid 90s for highs.
Valdosta community celebrates 10th Annual Eastside Day in Vallotton Park
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) -- On Saturday, June 8, a South Georgia committee celebrated its annual Unity Day with family fun including bouse houses, vendors, dancing, and more. The community packed Vallotton Park in Valdosta as they celebrated the 10th anniversary of the annual Eastside Day event. Some of the organizers said that the 10th anniversary represents the need for something positive in the community with the support and representation of all generations.
Four-star Valdosta quarterback commits to Georgia
Explosive recruit Todd Robinson has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. Robinson is projected to convert to running back for college. He plays high school football for Valdosta High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Robinson primarily plays quarterback for Valdosta, but is considered a running back recruit. Georgia football offered Robinson after he visited the Bulldogs in the spring. Robinson is a member of the class of 2025 and is a rising star in recruiting. Robinson was unranked when Georgia extended a scholarship offer to him, but now 247Sports considers Robinson to be the No. 7 running back recruit in the country. The Valdosta star is the No. 155 prospect in the nation and the No. 22 recruit in Georgia. Robinson, who also runs track, displays excellent speed and agility as a rusher. Robinson took snaps at wide receiver in 2023. The 6-foot, 190-pound athlete received his first SEC scholarship offer from Georgia. VALDOSTA, GA – Valdosta native and Indianapolis Colts cornerback, Kenny Moore, took a trip to his stomping grounds over the weekend to host his first ever Love One celebrity softball game. A game where not only some big names were able to show off their skills, but a community event aimed at bringing fans and celebrities together for a night of fun and entertainment, while supporting the Love One Foundation and giving back to the community.

LAKELAND, LANIER COUNTY, Georgia – With the inclusion of help from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), a limited amount of information is available since the homicide investigation is active and ongoing. The Lanier County News (LCN) did make and open records request of the Lanier County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO). According to the LCSO, they confirmed that on Sunday, May 2nd at “approximately 22:01 hours, Lakeland Police Department and Lanier County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to male who had a gunshot wound to the chest at [REDACTED], Lakeland, Lanier County.”

VALDOSTA – Valdosta City Schools congratulates Pinevale Elementary School for being awarded $10,000 from two distinguished grants. Congratulations to our media specialist, Kimberly Knight, for receiving two distinguished grants: the Beyond Words Grant from The Dollar General Literacy Foundation and a grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries! She looks forward to using the funds to purchase new books to promote literacy and make the library a place where students become more inspired and engaged in learning.
GSU names Valdosta natives to Spring 2024 Dean’s List
VALDOSTA – Georgia Southern University recently recognized Valdosta residents for earning a spot on the Spring 2024 Dean’s List. Georgia Southern University recently recognized approximately 3,460 students for excellence in academics on the Spring 2024 Dean’s List. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.

Valdosta State Football hosts annual titletown showcase
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - On Friday morning over 350 participants showed up to Valdosta State football’s practice field for the annual Titletown Showcase. The showcase open to current high school football players and transfers looking for their next home. All positions got a chance to show of their talent in front of some college scouts. The day got started with specialists, followed by linemen and skill positions.

Valdosta teen remains in coma after being hit by car
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - 17-year-old Javaute Brown remains in a coma after being hit by a car while riding a dirt bike on Tuesday, May 14. WALB was told by the family of Brown that “He is doing much better he’s still in a coma, the bleeding has stopped, they changed his ventilator put in his throat ‚so he came around to talk, eat. But he’s still on a feeding tube everything else he’s slowly pulling through.”
VCS student transfer request application period now open
VALDOSTA – Valdosta City Schools announces the application period is now open for the HB 251 student transfer request. As the parent or guardian of a student currently enrolled in Valdosta City Schools, we are notifying you of your rights under House Bill 251 (HB 251). This bill provides that students who reside within the Valdosta City Schools’ district may apply to transfer to schools deemed by the district to have adequate, permanent classroom space for the 2024 – 2025 school year. The school district will not provide transportation for students who elect to transfer under HB 251. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parents/guardians.
