More sushi, ramen options roll into Folsom as Roku officially opens on East Bidwell

Roseville-based Japanese restaurant begins soft opening in former University of Beer location, bringing sushi, ramen, robata and an expanded dining experience to Folsom. Another sushi and ramen option has rolled into Folsom’s dining scene as Roku Japanese Cuisine officially opened its doors for a soft opening along East Bidwell Street, bringing an extensive selection of sushi, sashimi, ramen and Japanese specialties to a location once known for craft beer and pub fare. The restaurant began welcoming customers Monday, Nov. 2, marking the arrival of the Roseville-based dining concept in Folsom following months of preparations and renovations.

Are you an adventurous snacker? Superette, the petite, lovingly curated gourmet grocery on Riverside Blvd. in Upper Land Park, has just the thing for you. Owner Sophie Mosgrave has just launched Superette Provisions Club, a monthly subscription plan serving a carefully chosen selection of snackables to your hungrily awaiting palate. Superette carries a kaleidoscopic array of delectables, from tinned fish to gourmet cheeses to locally made pickles to high-end artisan chocolates. The Provisions Club will draw from the store’s full product mix. “The idea behind it is just giving people a regular occurrence of things that we love. There will be some exclusives or at least sneak peeks to things that we want to bring in, but wanted to have like an audience first for it. I think it’s a fun opportunity for folks to maybe try things that they wouldn’t have otherwise known to try, or maybe missed in the shop,” she said. Commercial Dungeness crab season delayed in Northern California until 2027

Winter along the California coast means Dungeness crab season. But those who want crab for the holidays might have to catch it themselves. On Oct. 30 , the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the beginning of the recreational crab fishing season, and the delay of the commercial season. Certain areas are off-limits to crab fishing, due to high levels of neurotoxin found in the local crabs. Plus, the CDFW has restricted the use of crab traps in Northern California. Here’s what to know: When does recreational crab season begin in California? The recreational Dungeness crab season will open Nov. 7. However, the area between Cape Mendocino and the Ten Mile State Marine Reserve is off-limits to crab fishing. Along that span of coastline, north of Fort Bragg in Mendocino County, Dungeness crab have been found to contain “unhealthy levels of domoic acid.” Domoic acid accumulates in marine creatures from an algae called pseudo-nitzschia. Domoic acid is a neurotoxin that causes short-term memory loss, seizures, and even death in humans. Marine mammals with domoic acid toxicosis often suffer from brain damage and seizures. Elk Grove Mexican restaurant featuring seafood specialties to open second location

An Elk Grove taqueria is launching a second location and has announced a tentative opening date in the new year. El Puerto de Vallarta is set to open at 8409 Elk Grove Florin Road in February, the owner said in an interview with The Sacramento Bee. The restaurant specializes in mariscos, Mexican seafood dishes, including fish tacos, shrimp fajitas and Cóctel De Camarón y Pulpo, a shrimp and octopus cocktail. Owner Oscar Duran will oversee the Elk Grove Florin Road location. Having worked at the restaurant for 10 years, Duran said he wanted to “take a chance” by opening and running the second taqueria with his partner. “We thought we would continue that and open up another place on the other side of Elk Grove, since our clientele wouldn’t breach that bar on a normal basis,” Duran said. The original restaurant, 5105 Laguna Blvd., is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to its website. Gourmet taco truck favored by former Sacramento Kings player to open Auburn cantina

A popular gourmet taco truck, a personal favorite of former Sacramento Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox, is launching its first storefront. Banzito’s Tacos will open a cantina in the heart of old town Auburn at 216 Washington St. Owner Adam Saldaña said the truck’s signature is its cheese curds on top of its gourmet tacos. Saldaña said his love for cooking can be traced back to his mother. She was an “extravagant host,” inviting family over and having a menu posted on the dining room wall. Food was a passion for her, and as Saldaña helped her in the kitchen, it became his passion too. “Anybody that knows me knows I’ve been cooking my whole life,” Saldaña said. “I always cook for friends, barbecues, potlucks...it just stuck with me.” It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that his culinary hobby became a possible career. He began experimenting with flavor combinations, everything from green enchilada tacos to grilled bacon-wrapped jalapenos filled with cream cheese. Cockroaches and rodent droppings were found at this Land Park seafood restaurant

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to an Arden Arcade Mexican restaurant after finding 175 “fresh” rodent droppings. Additionally, 15 eateries were cited for health food violations ranging from dented cans, slime buildup inside an ice machine and black residue accumulation in the ice cream cooler. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 22, through Wednesday, Oct. 28.
