A massive, six-alarm inferno engulfed a former furniture factory early Saturday morning in southern York County.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a fire at the former Stewartstown Furniture Factory on the first block of Mill Street in Stewartstown around 1:57 a.m., according to York County 911 records.

The fire would soon grow to be the biggest fire in Stewartstown history, according to a Facebook post by Eureka Fire Company of Stewartstown's fire chief Todd Gibney.

"This is going to be a multiple day event," Gibney said in the post.

Numerous roads were closed around Stewartstown due to the fire, including Hill Street, Mill Street, High Street, and others.

The massive building, which was once the historic Stewartstown Furniture Factory, became an auto parts supply warehouse.

Richman's Auto Supply, which recently occupied the building, closed in December 2023. It was unclear if another business had since occupied the warehouse.

As dawn broke Saturday morning, flames and smoke continued to billow out of the hollowed out walls of the massive structure, with four ladder trucks pouring water onto the wreckage.

Firefighters set up tanker shuttles to attempt to ease the impact on the municipal water supply.

"We have done our best to get off of the Borough water system but you still may have discolored water for a period of time," said Gibney in the post.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
