Kaelie Tomalak’s dad pushed her to try flag football. Neither knew where it would lead
VILLA PARK, IL. − Like many other girls in Illinois , Kaelie Tomalak was not keen on the idea of playing flag football as a freshman. At the time, the sport was not sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) , meaning it was just a club sport. Plus, Tomalak wanted to focus on her first love: basketball. Flash forward three years later, Tomalak led St. Charles North (IL) to a state championship with a 32-13 win over Prospect in the IHSA state title game on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Willowbrook High School. "It's the dream to win the state title," Tomalak said following the win. "Especially in my senior year after having an early loss in the playoffs. It was something I was really driven toward. It's incredible to see it actually happen." Father convinces Kaelie Tomalak to give flag football a try While she was a freshman, Tomalak's father, Brian, had to convince his daughter to give flag football a try. "I had to talk her into it many years ago because she was a basketball player coming into high school," Brian Tomalak said. "I told her, 'Just try to play.' ... She went out and fell

The season came to a close for the Hononegah girls flag football team in the IHSA state quarterfinals on Friday night as they fell 27-6 to Mt. More Rockford-area sports: 13 is lucky number for Hononegah girls flag football en route to state "We really were in this one until late," Hononegah head coach Jason Brunke said. "We just couldn't find a way to finish." After freshman Clair Vanschelven hit another freshman Amaya Waters on a 49-yard touchdown pass, the third quarter ended with Mt. Prospect up only 13-6. But Hononegah couldn't find a way to break loose in the fourth quarter. "These girls have fought so hard this whole season, and tonight was no different," Brunke said. "They put their whole hearts into it once again." Hononegah, back-to-back NIC-10 champ, had allowed more than one touchdown only once in the previous 13 games, and that was just two TDs. This time undefeated Mt. Prospect found a way to put some points up on this defense. Sophomore

13 is lucky number for Hononegah girls flag football en route to state
The Hononegah girls flag football team won its 13th game in a row earlier this week to soar to the state quarterfinals, scoring 13 points for the third time in four playoff games, and finding a way to stay alive. Defense has been the name of the game for this year's Hononegah crew, especially down the stretch and this postseason, as they knocked off Crystal Lake Central 13-7 in Tuesday's Antioch Sectional final. They've allowed more than one touchdown only once the past 13 games, and that was in last week's 13-12 sectional semifinal win over Antioch. More Rockford-area flag football: Hononegah soars in girls flag football sectionals, but not Harlem "This defense has been the difference for us," Hononegah head coach Jason Brunke said. "They moved it a little on us, but we kept stalling them out, and we really didn't even need that goal line stand." In fact, CLC never got inside the Hononegah 10-yard line and only got inside the 20 once. Their lone touchdown was a 30-yarder. Defensive line star Taitum Cates was a big reason why. She had a sack and was all over the field Tuesday. She leads the team with 25 sacks on
