STARK, N.H. (TCD) -- State police recently located the remains of a missing 34-year-old man after they arrested a suspect in connection with his death.

According to a news release from Maine State Police, Alex Jackson’s family reported him missing on May 14, 2023, after they hadn’t heard from him since May 12, 2023. Family members reportedly said it was "atypical behavior for him."

According to the Windham Police Department, Jackson was last seen in Leeds, Maine, towing an unloaded gooseneck trailer. His phone was reportedly shut off at around 4:30 p.m. that day, and his dog was found a few days later in North Yarmouth wearing a different collar.

Over the course of the next 10 months, several local law enforcement agencies developed leads and identified 30-year-old Joseph Chute as the primary suspect. Officials arrested him on March 29, and he was booked into the Androscoggin County Jail on a charge of murder. He remains held without bail.

Chute’s lawyer tried to have the charge dropped because officials hadn’t found the victim’s body, the Portland Press Herald reports. His attorney also told the news source Chute allegedly informed other people that he was involved with the victim’s disappearance, which pointed to him as a suspect.

In an update, state police announced that on Friday, April 19, with help from the Windham Police Department, Maine Warden Service, New Hampshire State Police, and New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife Department, they searched the area of Stark, New Hampshire, and found Jackson’s remains. Authorities did not release Jackson’s cause and manner of death.
