Mississippi IHL meets on legal settlement related to UMMC

Trustees of Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning met for approximately two and a half hours behind closed doors on Thursday, Oct. 15 to discuss what Associate Commissioner for Legal Affairs and Risk Management Harold Pizzetta described as pending litigation involving the University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as several personnel matters. The board convened at 1:30 p.m. at the Universities Center in Jackson following a morning of committee meetings. The pending litigation appeared on the board’s regular agenda as a request from UMMC to “Settle Tort Claim number 3560” but contained no information on the proposed details nor any recommendation from IHL staff on whether to approve or deny the request. Barely 10 minutes into the meeting the board voted unanimously to move the item into executive session on a motion by Commissioner Jimmy Heidelberg. “Because this is a litigation matter requiring the discussion of legally privileged information, I make a motion that we move this item down the agenda to be taken up during executive session,” Heidelberg stated. The meeting became closed to the public shortly thereafter. A group of approximately five men wearing UMMC badges were later admitted into the closed session before departing around 4:15 p.m.

VWSD drops to a “C” rated district

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg Warren School District has dropped to a “C” rating after years of receiving a “B” on the state accountability reports. The district did improve in the overall grade and received 615 points in a possible 1000. Harrison: Poll on vouchers ignores strong results in Mississippi public schools

House Speaker Jason White – or at least the poll he commissioned – does not seem to be embracing what has become known as the “Mississippi miracle” that references the state’s dramatic gains on some national education tests. While Mississippi still has numerous hills to climb in terms of improving its education system, there is no doubt the state has made impressive strides. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves and others often tout those improvements. The governor has gone across the country touting the state’s education gains, appearing on multiple national news shows. In January 2025, Reeves said in a statement, “This is another massively historic win for education in Mississippi. Mississippi fourth graders aren’t just one of the best in reading and math gains — they’re the best in the nation.” Did Speaker White and his Republican-leaning Cygnal pollsters not get the memo? White, perhaps the most forceful elected official pushing to spend public money on private schools, commissioned a recent poll that seemed to dismiss those education gains. By a slim 41.1% to 39.2% margin, with 19.6% having no response, poll participants supported some form of school choice or vouchers.
