Great Bend BOE not ready to enter into lunch agreement with new daycare
The consent agenda at a board of education meeting is usually the easy part. The USD 428 Board of Education entered into a healthy debate Monday evening regarding food services to the new Bright Beginnings childcare facility in Great Bend. Board Member Chad Burroughs voiced the loudest concern to Superintendent Khris Thexton.
Barton County Community Baby Shower is Thursday, June 13
Parents-to-be, new parents, and more are invited to the Barton County Community Baby Shower on Thursday, June 13 at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend. Bev Frizell, WIC coordinator at the Barton County Health Department, said there will be approximately two dozen vendors to provide information on Safe Sleep and the services they provide to new families.
Swing bed program available at The University of Kansas Health System
The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus offers swing bed care, a service provided in rural hospitals with a Medicare service agreement. The program allows patients who are ready to move from acute care to skilled nursing care to stay in the same hospital for their care instead of being moved to a nursing facility.
Great Bend Rec approves $110,500 for wage increases
As discussed in 2021, the Great Bend Recreation Commission made a plan to increase their tax rate to stay competitive with staff wages. The Rec Commission Board was able to follow through on the move Monday by approving $110,500 in wage increases for the GBRC staff. Board Member Dr. Jon Pike made the motion that was approved with a 4-0 vote.

Significant retirements part of County Commission agenda
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two significant retirements of department heads at Reno County will be commemorated at Wednesday's Reno County Commission meeting. According to agenda documents, Barbara Lilyhorn began her career with Reno County on April 5, 2010 as the Aging and Public Transportation Director. She has served in this capacity for the entirety of her career with Reno County.
Barton duo recognized at NJCAA Foundation Awards
Barton Community College Athletics was well represented Thursday evening in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of the 2024 NJCAA Foundation Awards event. A pioneer in women's track and field, Veronica Campbell Brown ('01-03) was inducted into the NJCAA Foundation Hall of Fame amongst five others while recent Barton graduate Myles Thompson received the 2024 Champion Award exemplifying his resilience, excellence, and passion as inspiration to overcome challenges.
Great Bend receiving better response from lead & copper surveys
After sending out a survey last summer to residents to check what material their water line is composed of, the City of Great Bend has sent out another form to get more responses for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandatory survey. For most homes and buildings built after 1988, the presence of lead is less prevalent, but the EPA wants to know for sure.
