Spartanburg hosts start of annual mountain bike rides May 20
The Freewheelers Cycling Association of Spartanburg will welcome more than 500 cyclists to the 2024 Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Assault on Marion bike rides May 20. Kicking off at 6:30 a.m., both rides start at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium and continue along the same route with the 74.2-mile Marion ride concluding at the Tom Johnson Campground in Marion, North Carolina and the 102.7-mile Mitchell race ending in North Carolina at the summit of Mt. Mitchell.

Burke County bridge named in honor of fallen firefighter
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Family members of a fallen firefighter and transportation officials joined together on Thursday to name a bridge in the first responder's honor. The bridge on Drexel Road over I-40 in Burke County will now be known as the "Fighter Jason K Hensley Bridge." Hensley was killed while cleaning storm debris in October 2017 as a volunteer member of the Triple Community Fire Department.
