SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A twelve year old who was hit by a car on a scooter is now stable in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Hospital.

Tanner White was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the crash that happened on West Division Street near West Bypass his parents tell Ozarksfirst he is on a long road to recovery.

Tanner’s parents said the last couple of days have been overwhelming, but they are hoping for continued improvement.

Heather: “We’re taking it day by day right now. We have no idea. He’s very fortunate, I will say that, very fortunate,” said Heather Latham Tanner’s mom. “They said it could have been a lot worse than what it is.”

Tanner’s parents Heather Latham and Cordarious White said they had just gotten home from work on Tuesday afternoon when Tanner was hit by an SUV while he was riding his scooter near Division Street and West Bypass.

Heather: “Dad got there and he responded instantly to Dad, but he wasn’t responding to no one else,” Latham said. “Then I got there and he started to not respond, and I had to get pretty much kind of under the vehicle with him.”

His parents tell me it was a terrible accident.

“The driver of the vehicle that hit him was also blinded by the same vehicle,” said Cordarious White Tanner’s father. “So it was an incident to the point where neither could see either.”

His parents said Tanner is a kind and generous kid and he is fighting to heal.

Heather: “He’s touched almost everyone’s heart. He is very kind, very sweet, outgoing,” Latham said. “And it’s just a shock to a lot of the community like our little community that we live in.”

Tanner’s parents said he has made progress over the last two days, and they are hopeful with time and prayer he will keep getting better.

“Within two days, a lot of prayers went up for him, and he’s come far,” Latham said. “I just want to continue to pray.”

Tanner’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover expenses while he recovers.
