Monday, April 22: Rain chances return, storm chances follow
By Jamie Warriner,
Frost and near-freezing morning lows made for a cold April morning. Springfield dropped to 33° with a widespread light freeze hitting many areas to the north. This isn’t too far off the mark this point in the spring season and it looks like this may be the last freeze risk as a warm pattern sets up later this week and continues into May.
For tonight, we’ll enjoy a quiet and cool night with temperatures running about 15° warmer than previous nights.
Tuesday will be warmer as southwest winds blow in warm, spring air. A cold front will sweep through during the afternoon bringing clouds and a chance for showers. Temperatures will climb ahead of the front with mid to upper 70s expected south of I-44. Rain chances will be highest east of Hwy. 65.
The risk for rain will shift south through Northern Arkansas Tuesday evening with temperatures running a little cooler by Wednesday morning.
Despite the cooler air with the cold front, we’re still looking at “open window weather” Wednesday afternoon.
Widespread clouds and showers will make for a cooler day Thursday as a warm front lifts north through the region.
The warm front will open the door to the Gulf with a warm and humid air mass spreading in Friday. This will lay the foundation for some active weather Friday through the weekend as an active jet sends a couple of storms our way.
Severe storms will be possible as waves of storms impact the region with the first round in our area Friday afternoon into Friday evening. There may be a lull Saturday with additional storms possible Saturday night through Sunday.
This will definitely be a period to be weather aware, especially with the warm temperatures making for a nice weekend for outdoor activities (outside of stormy bouts).
In addition to severe weather, there could be some heavy rainfall, not necessarily a bad thing given the drier-than-normal weather this spring.
