Two people including a 4-year-old rescued from Loon Pond in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two individuals were rescued from Loon Pond early Monday evening in Springfield.

According to Springfield Fire, at approximately 6:12 p.m., SFD was called to Loon Pond after receiving reports of two people in the water.

Upon arrival, crews located a 51-year-old man and a 4-year-old girl struggling in the water. Quick actions from Engine 5 and the Rescue Squad resulted in the rescue of both individuals via boat.

According to Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte, the man had fallen off the back of a boat, and his granddaughter jumped into the water wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) to assist him. Despite the man not wearing a PFD, he managed to stay afloat by holding onto his granddaughter until help arrived.

Both individuals were treated at the scene for mild hypothermia, and Springfield Fire commended the exemplary efforts of the Engine 5 crew, the Rescue Squad, Ch-1, 911 call takers, and dispatchers for their professional and efficient response to the emergency.
