The man wanted for questioning in the death of his girlfriend last week was the individual who reported the incident to police, according to Spring Lake Police Lt. Greg Wilkerson.
In the 9:54 a.m. call to 911 on March 15, Patrick Antron Belk, 33, told a dispatcher that the woman, identified by police as Nakhia Wimberly, 40, was unresponsive at her home in the 100 block of Green Street and needed an ambulance.
"My friend, she was just drunk as hell last night, and I guess she hit her head," Belk said. "I tried to wake her up and she’s not responding."
"OK, I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time hearing you, are you able to repeat that for me," the dispatcher asked.
"Yes ma'am. A friend of mine got — was drunk last night and I guess she had hit her head but I put her in the bed and her head was like bleeding a little bit so I put her in the bed and she … I woke this morning and she still ain't trying to get up so I'm just worried about her now," Belk said.
When the dispatcher asked if Wimberly was breathing, Belk said she was breathing "a little bit."
Another voice can be heard in the background and Belk refers to the individual as "Ma," when he asks her for the number he was calling from to give to the dispatcher.
Lt. Wilkerson said the investigation into Wimberly's death became a homicide investigation after her injuries were "confirmed to be blunt force."
The Spring Lake Police Department announced on March 18 that Belk was sought for questioning.
"Patrick Belk is believed to have vital information that would assist Police with this case," a news release said.
