October Storm Brings Heavy Rain and Dangerous Surf Risk to Southern California

LOS ANGELES - Rain could begin Tuesday night, while thunderstorms and localized flooding become more likely Wednesday night through Thursday. Most areas could receive about an inch of rain over the two-day period. Some locations may see 1 to 2 inches, and stronger showers or thunderstorms could produce higher totals in isolated areas. "A pretty potent storm for October appears to be headed towards southern California Wednesday and Thursday," the National Weather Service said. The low-pressure system was off the Oregon coast Monday and is expected to move south along the California coast before turning inland somewhere between Central and Southern California on Thursday. Its timing and expected rainfall totals remain uncertain because the system is partly separated from the stronger jet stream to the north. "In addition, assuming the storm drops as far south as many of the (computer models) are now indicating, there is an increasing risk for scattered convective activity and locally heavy rainfall, especially Wednesday night into Thursday, which means likely a large variance in rainfall rates and totals," according to the NWS. The weather service said rain could fall at rates up to three-quarters of an inch per hour, and a flood watch may be

Storm Brings Thunderstorms, Flooding and Sierra Snow to California on Wednesday and Thursday as a Few Waterspouts May Form Off the Coast

LOS ANGELES, CA — A potent storm system is set to bring showers and scattered thunderstorms to large parts of California on Wednesday and Thursday, with lightning, heavy downpours, small hail, and gusty winds all possible. The setup features increasing moisture, colder air aloft, and strong upper-level winds, a combination that can support organized storms. While many locations will see rain without thunder, the storms that do form could produce intense bursts of rainfall and localized flooding.

Rain coming this week as cool fall weather arrives in California. What to expect

After another warm weekend, with widespread high temperatures in the 80s, California is set for a real cooldown this week. On Monday, high temperatures won’t climb past the low 70s as a westerly breeze from the Delta carries cooler air inland to Sacramento. The result will be a noticeably more autumnal day than any of late, with passing clouds and a crisp breeze. Further south, that cooler breeze wanes some. Even so, Modesto and Merced will see high temps in the 70s, and Fresno won’t be far behind in the low 80s. This is all thanks a deep region of low pressure moving off the Pacific Northwest over the coming days. On its approach, it forces an onshore breeze that works to cool the Golden State with air off the Pacific Ocean. That same region of low pressure will begin to move even closer on Tuesday, bringing more clouds and cooler overnight lows in the low 50s for Sacramento and the Delta region. From there, the low pressure region will move onshore, bringing occasional scattered showers with it through the end of the week. On and off showers expected Wednesday through Friday These scattered showers are expected to begin early

Wet Pattern and Heavy Mountain Snow Target California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado Late October as Rain Chances Spread to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas

DENVER, CO — Confidence is growing in a much wetter pattern across large portions of the western United States and the Great Plains during the final week of October, with the active setup potentially continuing into early November. A persistent trough near the West Coast is expected to steer repeated rounds of Pacific moisture inland, bringing lower elevation rain and heavy mountain snow from California and the Pacific Northwest into the Great Basin and Rockies.
