Two Santa Cruz-Accessible Taiwanese Recipes
Editors’ Note: Most ingredients are measured with the heart. Everything in these recipes can be found at local grocery stores. When I first came to UC Santa Cruz, I searched all throughout campus for a good Chinese/Taiwanese meal. In our Dining Reports, we share a firsthand perspective of a recent restaurant visit, covering everything from the vibe to must-get dishes. See more in the Eater app. You know you’re at an old-school place when a restaurant’s website hasn’t been updated since 2016. Carmel’s reputation tends to veer toward upscale, but Tommy’s Wok is a pleasant find that doesn’t break the bank.

With an auditorium packed with fourth and fifth graders from area schools, including Starlight, Ohlone, Mar Vista, Rio Del Mar, Spring Grove and Bradley, the program introduced students to the sections of the orchestra through a wide range of works. The program featured works from the Baroque period to Mexican folk music to modern jazz and pop music made famous by Elvis Presley. The show also brought members of the Cabrillo Youth Chorus to the stage and invited students to play along with certain pieces with their own recorders, musical instruments from the woodwind family.
