    Chargers Upset by St. Thomas in Greater Middlesex Conference Softball Tournament

    SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The fourth-seeded Spotswood High School varsity softball team kicked off the quarterfinal games of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field on Saturday. Spotswood High School hosted all four quarterfinal games this weekend. Spotswood's hopes for a deep run in the county tourney were stopped by the Trojans. The Chargers were shut out by fifth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas High School 6-0.

    Hayley Wieczerzak earned the shutout for St. Thomas, giving up two hits and striking out 16. Ava Mormile took the loss on the mound for the Chargers. Mormile gave up six runs on three hits and struck out four. Isabella Vitale and Hanna Brown both hit singles for Spotswood. Elizabeth Negron hit a two-run homer for St. Thomas. Sophia Colucci and Wieczerzak also had hits for St. Thomas.

    St. Thomas moves on to the semifinals, which will be held at South Plainfield High School on Wednesday. The Trojans face top-seeded Old Bridge High School. Old Bridge knocked out eighth-seeded Sayreville High School with a 2-1 victory. Second-seeded South Plainfield High School takes on sixth-seeded Metuchen High School in the other semifinal game. Metuchen defeated third-seeded North Brunswick High School 8-2. South Plainfield eliminated seventh-seeded East Brunswick with a 3-2 victory.

    Spotswood's loss dropped the Chargers' overall season record to 18-5. The Chargers return to regular season play on Tuesday when Spotswood hosts Matawan Regional High School at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field. Game time is at 4 p.m.
