    Chargers Split Weekend Games on Diamond

    SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School varsity baseball team had a busy Saturday. Spotswood started off the day with a home game versus John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. Later in the day, the team headed down to South Jersey to play Highland Regional High School in the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic at Jermoe Avenue Park in Margate. The Chargers lost to JFK 4-1, ending a 12-game unbeaten streak. Spotswood bounced back against Highland Regional, winning 3-1.

    Luc Acquaviva had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning with the Chargers up 1-0 in the first game against JFK. In the top of the sixth, Jayker Ogando hit a single into centerfield for JFK. After an infield base hit, the Mustangs' Grant Lorentzen bunted to load the bases. JFK scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Then, the game-winning run came across the plate on a misplayed grounder.

    Acquaviva took the loss on the mound for the Chargers. The senior had 11 strikeouts. Carter Cumiskey and Coleman Frost both spent time on the mound in the final inning. Lorentzen earned the victory for JFK. Lorentzen pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out 11. Luis Pimentel-Amaro pitched one inning for JFK with one strikeout.

    Breckyn DeAngelis hit two singles for the Chargers against JFK. Will Buchan, Ryan Orth and Mason Bitalla all had singles for Spotswood. John Lubin scored the Chargers' lone run.

    In the second game of the day, the Chargers and Highland Regional ended the first inning tied at one. Spotswood scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the Chargers' 12 th victory of the season. Jack Bicsko picked up the victory on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven. Bicsko was named the Player of the Game.

    Ryan Orth earned the save on the mound, pitching to the final two batters. Mike Romsteadt was charged with the loss. Romsteadt pitched 4.5 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out 10. Nate Dougherty also spent time on the mound for Highland Regional. Dougherty pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits.

    Orth had a single and an RBI for Spotswood. DeAngelis had a single and an RBI. The senior also scored a run for Spotswood. Cumiskey hit a single, a double and scored a run. Brandon Rivera had a single and an RBI. Sebastian Saracino hit a single and scored a run for Spotswood. Shawn Lennan had a single. Cade Schofield and Tommy Formisano had hits for Highland Regional.

    Spotswood's overall season record improved to 12-1-1 following the victory over Highland Regional. The Chargers' loss to JFK was the first of the season. Spotswood continues the home-at-home with JFK on Monday. The Chargers travel to John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in Iselin to take on the Mustangs. Game time is at 4 p.m.
