SHELL LAKE — A number of new, family-friendly events are being set around Spooner and Shell Lake, starting Memorial Day weekend and continuing throughout the summer.

At the Monday, May 13 Shell Lake City Council meeting, Mary Ann Rigby requested a street-use permit for a Spooner Police Foundation event — Murph.

Murph is a workout in honor of fallen U.S. Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy, and also in honor of other veterans and servicemen and women. Murphy’s favorite workout was a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 pushups and 300 squats, then another 1-mile run, done with a 20-pound rucksack. This workout is done on Memorial Day weekends across the nation.

Rigby said the event will be hosted on Monday, May 27, from 7 to 10 a.m. at Live Fast Fit Free in Shell Lake, located at 125 Anderson Ave. During that time, the gym will be accepting free-will offerings for the Bergin-Nieman Post 225 Honor Guard, and is offering access to its equipment for the Murph. Rigby said everyone is invited to participate, do their own workout or just enjoy the day.

Rigby said they hope to make this an annual event.

The council approved the street-use permit.

Mayor Rowie Hansberger announced the Shell Lake Great Citywide Get Together, another new event for the area.

“It is so dang exciting, you guys,” she said.

Many people, including the Chamber of Commerce, came up with the idea to have a citywide event on Sunday, July 14, with family-friendly events in Memorial Park and the pavilion. Hansberger said they coordinated with Louie’s Custom Meats out of Cumberland to donate 200 brats, and possibly root beer, and another local businessman offered to match that and give the city what it needs. The Lions Club will help come up with an amount to contribute.

“We’re going to be needing lots of help from people,” Hansberger said.

Intermezzo Music Club President Mary Hemshrot presented a concept for International Make Music Day on Friday, July 21, around Spooner and Shell Lake. Music Day is a worldwide event held every June 21, and people come together to make and enjoy music, indoors and outdoors.

Hemshrot said there will be steel drums at the Shell Lake Public Library, bucket drums and a harmonica player, along with Wisconsin Public Radio, at the pavilion, performances at the Arts Center, music at Klopp’s Fifth Avenue, a jam session at Northwood Strings and more. In the Spooner area, Joe Weiss will perform at Strongman Smokehouse in Trego, and Nan Hendry will be giving a ukulele workshop at the Spooner Memorial Library and also performing for Maple Ridge Care Center residents.

    “It’s for everybody,” Hemshrot said.

So far, there are 19 total signed up, but more are encouraged to take part.

“We actually have more places than we have musicians right now,” Hemshrot said.

New Interim Police Chief Mike Jaszczak said, “I might play.”

He said he plays guitar, and Council President Ken Schultz said, “Number 20!”

Hansberger then read a proclamation declaring June 21 as Make Music Day.

The shelter house at the beach has also been renamed to the Beach House, and Hansberger’s neighbor made a new sign to put outside of the shelter.

    New chief

Jaszczak was introduced Monday night to the council and community. He was an officer with the Shell Lake Police Department for three years and is retired from the Superior Police Department, with extensive law enforcement experience. Jaszczak takes over for Chief Dave Wilson, who recently retired.

In other action Monday night, the council:

Referred an intent to dedicate and name the Beach House after Schultz, for the time and volunteer hours he and others donated for community work, to the Plan Commission.Approved a five-year contract with Axon Enterprise Inc. as well as the proposed policy and procedure relating to body-warn cameras, with funding coming from the Public Safety Outlay account.Moved forward with a proposal from Lexipol on providing services for the Shell Lake Police Department Policies and Procedures Manual.
