Oklahoma County to seek forensic audit after $10M budget gap surfaces

Oklahoma County commissioners informally agreed to seek a special forensic audit of the county's murky finances at their session Wednesday, Sept. 16, and will consider specific requests of the State Auditor & Inspector's Office at a special meeting. Chairman Brian Maughan called the special meeting for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in Room 204 of the County Annex Building adjacent to the Courthouse in downtown OKC, after more than an hour in executive session. The move comes after District Attorney Vicki Behenna and County Clerk Maressa Treat recommended an audit of county books in the wake of several revelations of financial disarray. DA recommends forensic audit of OK County finances as errors pile up

District Attorney Vicki Behenna is recommending a forensic audit of Oklahoma County government finances after County Clerk Maressa Treat's staff found a series of financial improprieties that have the budget so messed up that officials don't know exactly how much money the county has. County officials do not know where or when rolling accounting errors and internal reporting mistakes first occurred, or how to immediately correct the situation. A forensic audit is not a criminal investigation, but one could uncover evidence of fraud that could be used in court. Behenna had no further comment. Her spokeswoman, Brook Arbeitman, said it would be up to the Board of County Commissioners to hire a forensic auditor. Treat revealed questionable bookkeeping to other elected county officials individually, and to The Oklahoman, over several days starting in early September. Her effort came less than a month after county commissioners approved changes to employment practices related to a criminal investigation of alleged embezzlement in the clerk's office. The alleged misappropriation, which led Treat to fire a buying agent, was not connected to the overall problems, Treat told The Oklahoman on Friday, Sept. 11.
