Edmond gets fresh look at traffic, development needs along Broadway, Second
EDMOND — A railroad underpass on busy 15th Street would keep stopped trains from causing traffic to back up onto busier Broadway Avenue. The fix could happen, but city planners said not anytime soon. Extending downtown north to Fifth Street, maybe all the way to Ninth Street, would make the heart of Edmond more walkable. Now, the foot-friendly core of town ends sharply at Second Street and Broadway. That could happen somewhat sooner, based on current planning priorities. For drivers, straightening out the routine snarl of vehicles on Second where north-south Broadway, Littler Avenue and Boulevard parallel so close together would ease traffic flow. That could be done fairly quickly, in city planning terms. Unwinding the Broadway-Littler-Boulevard traffic tangle could be one of the first results of a study of two main thoroughfares into Edmond : Broadway coming from Oklahoma City to the south, and Second coming from Interstate 35 to the east.
