SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Despite the rain Friday afternoon, Spartanburg’s Annual Spring fling got underway on time.

The event kicked off at 3 p.m. with the Crit cycling race in the streets of Downtown Spartanburg, followed by the main festivities at 5 p.m. with food vendors opening up for business.

Some people like Jasmine Hurr, 27, came early to make sure they missed the long lines during dinner rush.

“[The] barbecue has been hitting it,” said Hurr. “It smells so good, but I am an Asian cuisine person, so I’m going to check out that booth over there,” she said, pointing to another nearby food stall.

Others like Myers Brantly, 15, and her friend Susu Wood, 14, stayed later for all the rides.

“The rides are really cool, said Wood. “We just did the swing.”

But for Sanjay Singh, 25, Spring Fling allows him to eat a good meal and also get a good workout in all in the same day.

“I’m trynna get some food right now because it looks really good, and then I’m going to try and walk around to walk off that said food and then go home and sleep real good,” said Singh.

The was made possible because of the dozens of volunteers that spend their weekend making sure everything runs smoothly from set-up to break-down.

“It always puts a smile on my face when I’m out here doing something to help the community,” said Christopher Messer. He said he’s been volunteering for more than a decade. “After I finish this, and I finish volunteering. The main event I’m going to enjoy is the zip line.”

However, though the rain was brief, it did have it’s unintended consequences.

“It’s been very slow today,” said Greg L. “It’s been very slow for a Friday night. I’m hoping it’s because of the weather [and] the cooler conditions.”

Spring Fling runs from Friday to Sunday. The event continues on Saturday at 11 a.m., ending at 9 p.m.. It resumes for it’s final day on Sunday at 12 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
