Not only are there existential threats to democracy by bad actors, but we’re losing experienced county election officials across the state and it’s been difficult to fill critical poll worker positions. This issue is especially dire in Northeast Philadelphia, where polling places are far too frequently understaffed.
Charges dropped in 2011 Point Breeze shooting
A man formerly convicted of a mass shooting in South Philly is free after charges were vacated by a federal court. District Attorney Larry Krasner announced his office will drop all charges against Charles Rice, who was convicted in September 2011 for a shooting in a Point Breeze residence that injured a man who was allegedly affiliated with a violent neighborhood group. The victim’s mother, sister and a young cousin were also injured in the shooting.
Audenried girls to play in the state semifinal
The Universal Audenried Charter High School girls basketball team will face Scranton Prep in the PIAA Class 4A semifinal tonight at Bethlehem High School at 6 p.m. The Lady Rockets are fresh off a 79-53 quarterfinal victory over Delone Catholic that featured a dominating 41-point performance by junior Shayla Smith.

N-G’s Arrigale adds coaching milestones
Neumann-Goretti High School boys basketball coach Carl Arrigale recently made history in two categories. The Saints’ longtime coach recorded his 600th career win on March 8 as Neumann-Goretti defeated Littlestown, 86-63, in the first round of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs. Earlier this season, Arrigale notched his 300th Catholic League victory when the Saints defeated Conwell-Egan, 83-63, on Jan. 22.
