98 Chihuahuas rescued from ‘horrible conditions’ at Socorro home

SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) –  A large group of dogs were rescued from horrible conditions inside a New Mexico home. Now, researchers hope to find the malnourished animals new homes.

“The conditions were pretty horrible. The dogs have clearly not been properly nourished. They’ve just been eating whatever they can find,” said Keenan Foster with East Mountain Companion Animal Project (EMCAP).

According to Foster, on Thursday, his organization and other animal rescue groups from the state rescued 98 dogs from a hoarder’s home in Socorro. He said the dogs were Chihuahuas and some were Chihuahua mixes; 16 of the dogs were pregnant.

“Some were up to 15 years old, so way too old to still be having babies. They’ve had multiple litters; a lot of the males were aggressive,” said Foster.

Foster said the house was full of animal feces, and the yard was in bad shape. Most of the dogs were covered in fleas and ticks.

“There’s going to be a lot of medical that needs to be done – a lot of dental,” Foster added.

EMCAP took 61 dogs which are all in foster homes now. The dogs are not ready to be adopted yet as they are receiving clinical care.

Other groups from around the state also stepped in, including Española Humane, who said most of the 10 dogs they rescued from the house can be adopted by next week.

“If people are not interested in adopting a Chihuahua, you can help us open up more kennels to give more space to the Chihuahuas by adopting another dog. We are 100 percent full right now,” said Española Humane Communications Director Mattie Allen.
