Pizza, sushi and Mexican restaurants with some special twists are among the latest Simi Valley eateries.

Slice House

Slice House by Tony Gemignani, an artisan pizza restaurant, is on its way to opening in Simi Valley.

Gemignani is a chef and partner who owns almost 30 restaurants in Northern California and Las Vegas, including Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco.

The venue's sign is up in the El Paseo Shopping Center at 2916-B Tapo Canyon Road. A peek through the glass exterior shows tables and chairs set up.

The city has issued permits for the business, said Samantha Argabrite, deputy city manager, and building and safety officials signed off on it Tuesday.

“Hopefully they’ll be opening soon,” she said.

Slice House couldn’t be reached for comment, but the chain’s website, slicehouse.com, said the Simi location was in development.

Last summer, Slice House opened it first Southern California location in Thousand Oaks. Sites in Camarillo and Ventura are also listed on the company's website as being in development.

The restaurant is billed as a way to enjoy slices of Gemignani’s California, New York, Sicilian and Detroit pizzas. The chain also offers calzones, strombolis, paninis, salads, meatball subs and house-made pastas.

Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushi gives its spicy dishes dramatic names such as Fire Cracker and Heart Attack. The latter is sushi with jalapenos.

But less spicy options are also on the menu at the restaurant, which opened at the end of December at 5830 E. Los Angeles Ave., near the cross with Yosemite Avenue.

The fish-centric fare, much of it served cold, is popular in Simi Valley because of its quality and the city’s hot weather, owner Paul Yang said.

He attributes the quality to experienced chef J.J. Lee and his reliance on fresh fish.

Tuna and salmon items are popular, Yang said. He recommends the halibut.

Mariachi Loco Grill & Cantina

Business has been good at Mariachi Loco Grill & Cantina, which hopes to see even more customers after it gets its liquor license, manager Brittany Ramirez said.

The business opened in September at 2345 Erringer Road, #101. It’s owned by Ramirez’s husband, Angel Ramirez, and his three cousins.

Brittany Ramirez said the business stands out for its modern twists on traditional Mexican food. She cited the example of a tuna roll that is Mexican sushi with cucumbers and cream cheese.

“It’s a bestseller,” Ramirez said.
