When disasters are deemed too small, rural Mississippi struggles to recover
Under a mystic blend of pink lightning and green sky, Victoria Jackson called her daughter in a panic, warning her of the news: A tornado was on a path towards Rolling Fork. Her daughter was working that March night at Chuck’s Dairy Bar, a staple of the small, south Delta town. Along with some customers, Jackson’s daughter, Natasha, nestled into one of the coolers in the restaurant.
Rolling Fork Tornado Update: Winds Upgraded, Rating Stays the Same
Some of the people who witnessed the tornado devastation in Rolling Fork and Silver City back in March couldn’t believe that the storm didn’t earn the highest classification– EF-5. The National Weather Service called it an EF-4 with top winds initially estimated at 170 miles an hour– not even close to EF-5 strength. But the damage has undergone a further review as more information has come in.
Deadly holiday weekend claims three lives, 48 injuries on Mississippi highways
Three fatal wrecks were reported on state highways and interstates over the Memorial Day weekend by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The 2023 MHP enforcement period began Friday at 6 a.m. and concluded at midnight Tuesday. During this time, MHP issued a total of 8,945 citations, made 170 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 961 motorists for seatbelt violations. Troopers also investigated 156 crashes, resulting in 48 injuries and three deaths. The fatal crashes occurred in Yazoo, Stone, and Holmes counties.

City of Biloxi to donate firetruck to Rolling Fork
After receiving three new firetrucks, the City of Biloxi Fire Department has decided to give their retired one a new life. The city received a firetruck in 2000 for the annexation of Woolmarket. It can hold up to 1,000 gallons of water and was built for rural areas, making it perfect for Rolling Fork, a town that lost everything during a tornado earlier this year.
