Realtor Q+A - Ken Haynes
Please talk about your family: I recently married my beautiful wife Jennifer Hernandez Haynes here on St. Simons. She has two wonderful children, Jon Henry Butler and Caroline Butler. I have three stepdaughters, Shelby Aspinwall, Darby Reader and Samantha Barrett. My father, Dr. W. Felix Haynes Jr. was the senior pastor at the First Baptist Church on Ocean Boulevard twice, dating back to 1971. My mother, Miriam Jones Haynes, passed away in December of 2015 and is buried in Christ Church Cemetery here on the island. My sister, Dr. Kimberly Haynes Johnson lives in Pike County, with her husband Briar. She is an educator and published author. Her book, “Father Forgive Me” is about growing up here on the island as a pastor’s kid. Among my aunts and uncles, Greg and Nora Haynes are also islanders.
The great outdoors: Top 10 activities in the Isles
How many times have you gone on vacation, or just been hanging around the house with your spouse, partner or family and heard that dreaded refrain of “there’s nothing to do?” The good news is, there’s plenty to do in the Golden Isles, and many activities are either free or low-cost. Obviously, we couldn’t include everything, but as you explore our area go a bit farther afield and see what else you can find. For example, if you’re spending the day on Jekyll Island, perhaps playing mini-golf and going to the beach, take the opportunity to see the Jekyll Island Club, explore Driftwood Beach or pay a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. On St. Simons Island, try to find the tree spirits that have been carved in our trees (you’ll find a map at www.goldenisles.com), or visit the Pier in the St. Simons Village to watch people haul in their catches. You might also take the time to climb the St. Simons Lighthouse, or learn about the role the Golden Isles played in World War II by visiting the Homefront Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station on East Beach. Whatever you decide, get out and have fun.
