MANITOWOC – After years of sitting vacant, the former Mid-Cities Mall site is coming back to life. Construction is underway on multifamily housing at the former Mid-Cities Mall and Edgewater Plaza site . It is the first step in a development that will include a mix of multifamily and single-family housing, retail space and restaurants, according to city officials. Restaurants we miss: Readers name the Manitowoc-area restaurants they miss most | Exclusive The Manitowoc Plan Commission approved the final plat for the Mariner Lux Subdivision in July, clearing the final hurdle before construction could begin. Adam Tegan, Manitowoc’s community development director, said this summer that he expected work to begin in late summer or fall. The plat serves as a blueprint for the property, showing where homes, apartments, commercial space and streets will be located. Why mall redevelopment took years Redevelopment of the former Mid-Cities Mall and Edgewater Plaza property — in a prominent location across Memorial Drive from the Lake Michigan shoreline — has been years in the making. After the mall sat empty for years and its parking lot deteriorated, city leaders moved to spur redevelopment. Momentum began building in 2023, when the city considered using eminent domain

Luminous water tower, new housing, more Lawrence Town Center updates
It's been 13 months since Boardwalk Development Co. CEO Jim Ostrom stood in a wet, muddy field to throw the ceremonial first shovel of dirt to start construction of a sprawling new mixed-use neighborhood in the Town of Lawrence. As he looked out on the same site on the warm, sunny morning on Oct. 7 Ostrom was impressed by the farm field's multifaceted transformation into Lawrence Town Center in such a short time. The first of more than a dozen homes are under construction and the first apartment building's second elevator shaft is quickly rising. Town Center Drive now connects Mid Valley Drive to Williams Grant Drive, the neighborhood's western and eastern boundaries. Several more roads have been paved in asphalt. Recreation trails have been paved, and work has started on resident amenities like pickleball and basketball courts. In Love Park, the development's centerpiece, bridges will soon span the 6-acre lake to connect a central island to the shore. Everywhere young trees and vegetation have been planted. "It’s kind of crazy but on a beautiful day it’s rewarding to be here," Ostrom told the Press-Gazette. "It's an exceptional day. We're making fabulous progress." Even more crazy: The 153-acre site bounded

Duo Applebee's, IHOP restaurant in Sheboygan no longer in the works
SHEBOYGAN – Preliminary plans for a dual-branded Applebee’s and IHOP have been tossed out for now. Plans to open the duo restaurant in the former Applebee's, 526 S. Taylor Drive, won't be moving forward, according to Founders 3, the commercial real estate agency marketing the site. The Licensing, Hearings and Public Safety Committee approved a liquor license in May for AppHop Sheboygan, Inc. to open the duo restaurant . The building has no active prospects, according to Founders 3. The franchisee behind Apphop Sheboygan, Inc., has opened Applebee’s and IHOP combo restaurants in other Wisconsin communities, like Watertown, Marshfield and Plover, according to news reports. Sam Soleimani, president and CEO of Siyavoush Soleimani Group, an Applebee’s and IHOP franchisee, said in a written statement that after evaluating development plans with market priorities and the group's business strategy, they decided not to move forward with the project. "We remain excited about the future of the dual-branded concept and look forward to opening in other markets across Wisconsin," Soleimani continued in the statement. Sheboygan’s Applebee’s closed in summer 2023 after more than 20 years of business. (This story has been updated with the most recent information.) Contact Alex Garner at 224-374-2332 or

Appleton sisters ran dry goods store in years before women could vote
At a time when women didn't have a vote and there was no law preventing banks from turning them away, there were three sisters who ran a shop in downtown Appleton. It closed 60 years ago, but Geenen’s Dry Goods served the Appleton area for nearly seven decades, and was run by the Geenen sisters for almost all of it. It stood in what is now the 100 block of East College Avenue. The store was organized in 1896 as Geenen Koch and Smith, by the Misses Minnie, Dina and Anna Geenen, A.J. Koch and William Smith. The store was small and offered limited stock. Just two years later, the sisters purchased the shares of Koch and Smith, and the company became known as D. M. and A. Geenen. The three sisters handled the business alone at that time. Advertisements printed in the newspapers show they sold women’s clothing, coats, millinery, jewelry, undergarments, perfumes, household linens and China to name just a few. A Jan. 27, 1909 Post-Crescent article spoke about a Dutch spinning wheel on display in a store window, “A reminder of the days of our grandmothers, who spun flax on spinning wheels and made all their own

Milwaukee-based developer Wire Capital Group, breaks ground on Maritime Lofts site in Manitowoc
On Thursday, August 27, 2026, Wire Capital Group broke ground on the future site of the Maritime Lofts on the long-vacant former Mirro Aluminum site. The former aluminum cookware plant was torn down in 2017 and the site at 1512 Washington Street has sat empty ever since. That was until January 2022, when Wire Capital Group, a Milwaukee-based, Black founded and owned developer placed and won a bid with the city of Manitowoc to develop the Former Mirro Cookware site into affordable housing on the south side of the vacant property. The city sold the site to Wire Capital Group for $1, because the site was declared a contamination site by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Former Younkers store in Sturgeon Bay could get DCEDC as new tenant
The former Younkers Home Store building on North Fourth Street in downtown Sturgeon Bay is on track to get a primary tenant, with the Door County Economic Development Corp. working on an agreement with the county, which owns the building, to move there. The plan, approved by the Door County Board in its Sept. 24 meeting, would solve issues on both sides of the agreement. The county has owned the building since March 2019, after the Younkers department store chain went out of business and closed its two Sturgeon Bay locations the year before. But talks and studies over the years to redevelop it for a combination of retail space and storage and archive space for the Door County Museum didn't come to fruition until the end of 2025, when the County Board approved a plan to renovate the building, with the back intended for storage and work space for the museum, located in the same block as the building, and the front for commercial use. The board in its July 28 meeting approved $3.3 million in contracts to renovate the Younkers building and improve ADA access to the museum. "When we looked at the building, one of the options
