NEPTUNE CITY - On a late spring night in the Shark River basin, Captain Al Modjeski of the American Littoral Society peers down in the shallow water and shouts excitedly, "Over here! Doubling up!" as a pack of volunteers rushes to meet him, carrying clipboards and drills, head lamps bobbing over the dark sand. This group of five, one of several that met at Memorial Park, are tagging horseshoe crabs that migrate seasonally through the Shark River, while learning everything about the prehistoric arthropod from its anatomy, behavior and habitat to how and why the crabs are tagged...

Route 34 in Colts Neck closed after single-car accident
COLTS NECK - Route 34 was closed Saturday morning in both directions between Newman Springs Road and South Street after a vehicle hit a utility pole, authorities said. Colts Neck Sgt. Matthew Miyakawa said the highway was expected to remained closed for much of the day while crews from Jersey Central Power & Light and Verizon help to clear the scene.
