On-the-go international cuisine is now as close as Scappoose with the opening of The Lodge, a combination food pod and tap house adjacent to U.S. Highway 30.

The ambitious project, partnered by Jeff Schultz, Nick Hurliman and Matt McHugh, is an 11-cart pod containing an inside tap house-eating area of approximately 2,200 square feet in size.

In planning and developing the Scappoose complex, the three developers traveled outside Columbia County, visiting food carts in Portland, Beaverton and Hillsboro.

“It’s a family-friendly environment,” Schultz said of The Lodge. “We have cuisines from around the world. We’re in a soft open phase right now, where our carts are coming online a little at a time.”

As The Lodge, at 51875 S.W. Old Portland Road, was being put together, Schultz said it hasn’t been easy getting everybody on the same page. But, he added, “We have had quite a bit of help from the city, getting our carts inspected, and everything.”

Among the food carts you’ll see at The Lodge is Bobablastic, which will offer a big variety of Boba tea flavors, as well as desserts. For Philly cheesesteak lovers, MZ Philly will satisfy your hunger needs. And at Pig Cow Spud, they serve special barbecue meats on Friday and Saturday nights.

Additionally, Delicias Restaurant offers Salvadoran and Mexican food, Esan Thai specializes in Thai cuisine and Glazed and Confused provides freshly baked donuts. Lucky Teriyaki Sushi & Ramen will offer a special student menu, as well as California rolls, Philly Salmon rolls, sushi burritos and plenty of ramen.

A full listing of food carts can be found at their website, www.lodgecarts.com.If you wish to dine inside at The Lodge, try out the dining hall/tap house, which offers food from the surrounding carts.

“They do mixed drinks, they do wine, they do beer,” Schultz said. “We have 23 taps … we have root beer that is on tap for the kids.”

He added, “Everybody is welcome inside the taphouse. There is seating outside, we have benches outside and a covered area.”

Schultz, who lives in Warren, says residents and visitors are enjoying the new food options in Scappoose.

“We’ve been busy every day we’ve been open,” he said, noting that he hopes for good weather during the Memorial Day weekend. “It’s a three-day weekend, so if we end up getting a little bit of nice weather, I suspect its going to be pretty busy.”

Setting up the food carts and taphouse is an ever-evolving process, but Schultz said he is getting positive feedback from everybody.

“We want to make sure it’s a good-running organization,” he said. “Constant improvement is good, and that’s what we’re shooting for.”

Schutz added, “I can say this with every one of our carts, it’s really good … I think I gained five pounds in the testing process.”

The Lodge will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with plans to open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
