Playing in the rugged Region 3-4A, Islands baseball coach Brandon Collins has said all season long that his Sharks squad just wanted to reach the playoffs — and then let the chips fall where they may.

The Sharks took two of three in their final regular season series with Burke County to secure the No. 4 seed out of the region and Islands (20-10) will be on the road to face West Laurens (18-9), the Region 2-4A champs on Thursday in a doubleheader in the first round of the playoffs.

The Sharks have five players who have signed to play college ball in Johnny Calloway (Army), Ben Fernandez (Miles College), Joey Cardillo (Milligan University), Braedin Swab (East Georgia) and Brennan Smith (Mary Baldwin University).

Wyatt Oliver and Calloway earned the pitching wins in the key victories over Burke County. Calloway, the team's ace lefty, is 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA. Junior catcher Dylan Gordon has been a breakout player for the Sharks this season and is hitting .361.

"The number one thing for us was just to get into the playoffs," said Collins, the former Calvary Day star in his sixth season leading the program. "We feel confident because we have eight or nine guys who can get the job done on the hill, and that gives us a good chance to win any series. We have a strong senior class of players, and we're going to count on their experience."

Here's a look at the matchups for teams from the Greater Savannah area in the first round of the playoffs.
