Sandy’s Lander Marak wins gold at 2024 Oregon Relays

A Sandy senior won a gold medal at one of the premiere track and field events: the Oregon Relays, a multi-day outing that brings together the best athletes from around the region.

The Relays were held Friday-Saturday, April 19-20, at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Sandy’s Lander Marak won the hammer with a massive personal record toss of 61.59 meters. That bested the runner-up by nearly five meters.

Marak also placed 13th in the discus (44.48) and 34th in shot put (13.25).

The Pioneers strongman wasn’t alone at the Oregon Relays. Some other local finishers included:

Caleb Perry, Barlow sophomore, 6th in the javelin (51.96 PR)

Hannah Petrillo, Sandy junior, 7th in the hammer (40.91 PR)

Susan Mcgaughey, Sandy senior, 15th in the 2K steeplechase (8:16.36 PR)

Maggie Zielinski, Barlow sophomore, 15th in the pole vault (3.35 PR)

Giovanni Bogarin, Barlow sophomore, 21st in the 400 (50.66)

Grayson Brown, Sandy senior, 21st in the discus (41.12)

Avery Morris, Gresham junior, 21st in the 2K steeplechase (9:12.46 PR)

Hudson Pearson, Sandy freshman, 26th in the long jump (6.10)

Clay Swift, Barlow junior, 27th in the 100 (11.20 PR)

And several of the schools had good showings in the eponymous relays:

Barlow boys relay of Jett Fay, Swift, Bogarin, and Sentori Martino finished 18th in the 4x100 relay (43.28)

Gresham boys relay of Wilando Bell-Henderson, Christ Min, Skylar Landingin, and Cole Parker were 32nd in the SMR 1600 (3:53.86)

Barlow girls relay of Adams, Clara Heston, Aubrey Heath and Gracie Heath took 35th in the 4x400 relay (4:14.66)

Gresham girls relay of Josefina Tubania Askay, Ly’zarea Pullom, Brynn Mantalas, and Keira Knobbs finished 39th in the SMR 1600 (4:56.87)
