Carl's Townhouse serves not only food but the community too
CHILLICOTHE — While everyone in Chillicothe knows Carl's Townhouse for whipping up pancakes, burgers, and mac and cheese bites, they might not know that they do not just serve food, but serve the community too. Owner Mark Trainer and his wife, Tracy, have owned Carl's since 2015 and Mark said the two wanted to own a business in the area in order to be more involved in the community. "So doing this, not only allows us to do that, it's a pretty special restaurant," Trainer said. "We do a lot with the schools in the area, we will donate just about anything to a school, whether it's band, cheerleading, basketball or football. We will give them something, as long as they have a legitimate need." Trainer said he and his wife support things in the community, not just schools. "We don't just limit it to the schools, but we're more apt to give for the students and kids," Trainer said. "Kids are our future." Carl's is a busy restaurant and is usually filled with the hustle and bustle of those from Chillicothe or even those from out of town. "It's every weekend, we seem to meet new people that come

Award-winning artist Yan Sun takes reins as NOAPS Spring 2026 judge
ZANESVILLE – There will only be one Best in Show winner for an upcoming international painting exhibit, and local artist and retired Muskingum University professor Yan Sun will have the final say on who. Yan, co-founder of downtown Zanesville's Yan Sun Art Museum & Gallery, will have to carefully and systematically examine likely hundreds, or even well over a 1,000, paintings from across the globe by the time the National Oil & Acrylic Painters' Society (NOAPS) Spring 2026 online exhibit opens in May. He's been judging or jurying shows for around 20 years, he explained, so it's certainly not his first time. It's also not his first time judging for the NOAPS. However, it is his first year with them as the only judge. He has previously assisted as part of a three-person panel, like in 2025, that narrowed down around 1,000 works to 200. "I'm very happy to be the jury this year. I understand it's a great challenge for me," Yan told the Times Recorder. "(I'll) need to review the works many times." He'll be trusting his eyes and his background, using his 29 years' experience as an art history professor at Muskingum University and 40 as an
