55-hour lane closures planned for Highway 101 in Monterey County
PRUNEDALE, Calif. — Caltrans said that one lane of Highway 101 will be closed in Prunedale for over two days starting Friday night. Alternating lane closures are planned for south Highway 101 from Highway 156 west to Blackie Road starting Friday at 8 p.m. At no point will both lanes be closed at the same time.

Watsonville High junior Katelynn Ruiz and several other local athletes are set to compete in this weekend’s Central Coast Section Track and Field Championships in Gilroy. The Wildcatz standout distance runner advanced in the 3200-meters finals after she finished in 11 minutes, 30.11 seconds during the semifinals at Gilroy High School on May 11.
Man arrested for DUI after crash, one injured
A Watsonville man was arrested on suspicion of DUI Monday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash. Watsonville Police officer Bobby Rodriguez said the suspect was driving a red Chevy Silverado pickup westbound on Martinelli Street around 4:30pm. Witnesses told police that the driver ran a stop sign at Brewington Avenue, and plowed broadside into a black GMC Yukon Denali SUV driven by a Watsonville man. He had just pulled away from a stop sign at Martinelli Street and was attempting to continue south on Brewington when he was struck.

Monica Andrade is a Salinas native who found her home in Soledad, where she has lived for the past 12 years. During this time, she has become an advocate for equity and social justice. Last year, Andrade and the Soledad Committee for Voting Rights challenged the City Council’s decision to approve a five-district map with a rotating mayor. They collected enough signatures for a referendum. In March, voters rejected the measure by a massive margin, with over 80 percent of the votes, instead favoring four districts and an at-large mayor. (Andrade’s husband, Fernando Cabrera, is a councilmember.)

Boys: St. Francis High senior Trey Silva had one double and four RBIs for the Sharks baseball team in an 11-1 win over Monterey High in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division action May 8. Prior to that, he had five strikeouts and allowed one earned run in four innings for the Sharks in a 6-3 win over Palma High league action May 6. Silva also batted 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
