What was supposed to be an interview with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan (D) turned into a physical scuffle between a passerby and an off duty police officer working as the mayor’s security detail.

While conducting an interview with local outlet KRON4 on the streets on San Jose, Mahan was approached by a man talking on a phone. Mahan told the man an interview was being done when the man was standing next to him on the phone. He did not appear to know the mayor.

“I’m talking on the phone, you got a problem?” the man on the phone said to someone off camera.

The man and Mahan’s security detail exchanged some more words off camera and the man on the phone began cursing and eventually said, “I will smack you right now… you want to get smacked?!”

A physical altercation then broke out between the man and the officer that KRON reported lasted minutes before police arrived. Eventually, a customer at a nearby restaurant got involved while the man was trying to pull the officer’s tie. The mayor did not get involved in the scuffle and instead called 911.

The suspect was identified by police as 35-year-old Wesley Pollard . Police say their off duty officer identified himself off camera and noted he tried numerous times to deescalate the situation. Pollard was arrested for resisting arrest and battery on an officer.

Mayor Mahan’s office praised his security officer as “heroic” after the incident.

“Mayor Matt Mahan is deeply grateful to his security detail and the entire San Jose Police Department,” they said.
