Baron Davis on how partying led to the formation of the "We Believe" Warriors: "We was like a rap group, we was like the Wu-Tang"

The 2006-07 Golden State squad, known as the “We Believe" Warriors, was not your typical eighth seed. They quickly proved that to everyone when they eliminated the first-seeded Dallas Mavericks in six games in the first round of the playoffs.

The 2007 Warriors were a rag-tag group of players, and if they had a leader on the court, it was probably Baron Davis . When looking back on their run, Davis made a shocking admission about how the team’s legendary mentality came to fruition.

How "We Believe" Warriors came to be

Davis was a talented point guard, both when it came to scoring and passing the ball. That was very true during the 2006-07 campaign, as he led the Warriors in points (20.1) and assists per game (8.1).

The Warriors were bad for much of the year, but they flipped a switch and eventually rode that to a historic playoff victory. According to Baron, what helped the team succeed was that every time they won, they went out and partied together, no matter what city they were in.

"It happened because we was like, 'Alright, f*** it, everybody giving up on us. If we gonna party, we gonna party on the court, and then after the game, if we win, we going out,'" Davis said on Club 520 . "We went out every night, every time…It was the wildest s***, because we was like a rap group, we was like the Wu-Tang. We play, we go to a club, motherf***ers like, 'Damn, this Wu-Tang, Death Wow, Bad Boy.' Whatever it was, we was cracking every city. It didn't matter what city it was, we was going to the club, we was taking over the club."

    Partying brought the team together

At first, this may seem like a somewhat crazy concept. These guys are professional athletes and should be avoiding parties and taking care of their bodies, right? However, that wasn’t the case with this team. In fact, they actively sought out parties on a near-nightly basis.

While it may seem like a poor strategy for success in the NBA, B-Diddy shared that it inadvertently made the team close. A disjointed group bonded with each other, and they ended up having fun on the court and off it, too.

The result was the third time in NBA history that an eight-seed defeated a one-seed in the playoffs. While the Warriors lost their next series against the Utah Jazz, their mark on the league had been set in stone.

Davis never reached the same highs with Golden State after this season, but it didn’t matter because of what the team accomplished. Maybe the partying strategy caught up to them in the future, but it certainly worked for this squad, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters.
