Hawaii baseball holds off UC San Diego in extras

The University of Hawaii baseball team grinded out a 4-3 win over UC San Diego in 10 innings on Friday.

Hawaii improves to 23-15 overall and 7-9 in Big West Conference play.

UCSD, which won the 2023 Big West regular season but was ineligible for the NCAA Division I Tournament as a DII transition member, entered the game near the top of the conference standings and dropped to 26-12 overall and 13-6 in Big West Conference play.

Hawaii trotted out freshman Sebastian Gonzalez for his first Friday start, where he went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) with four hits, two walks and five strikeouts in a no decision.

With the ‘Bows and Tritons tied at 3 through nine innings, UH took the lead for good on DallasJ Duarte’s RBI single in the top of the tenth. Duarte finished with a team-high two hits and game-high three RBI.

Freshman Brayden Marx got the win for UH with 0.2 scoreless innings, while Danny Veloz worked a scoreless tenth for the save.

The Rainbow Warriors and Tritons resume their series on Saturday at 11 a.m. HST
