SF County jails to end lockdowns following violent attacks on staff

SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — Low staffing levels and a lack of jail housing space are a couple of the factors behind an increase in attacks on San Francisco Sheriff's Office jail staff, according to Sheriff Paul Miyamoto. Since March 29, the sheriff's office reported that nine staff members at San Francisco jails have been assaulted by inmates.

Two San Francisco County jails were placed on lockdown over the weekend due to "escalating attacks" on deputies and jail staff members, the sheriff's office said. Some of those staffers suffered "serious injuries."

On Tuesday, Miyamoto announced that County Jail No. 2, located at 425 7th Street, would end on Wednesday.

County Jail No. 3, which is located in San Bruno, will reopen "later this week" pending an investigation. The San Bruno jail was the site of a two-hour barricade incident, the sheriff's office said, after two inmates refused to leave their cells.

"I am proud of our deputies who work hard in a high-risk setting where they are dealing with challenging circumstances every day," Miyamoto said in a statement released on Facebook . "Those incarcerated persons who choose to physically assault our staff must be held accountable."
