Tim Duncan , who had yet to reach his prime, was one of the most sought-after free-agent prospects in the summer of 2000. The Orlando Magic were heavily reported to be in the race to sign the 24-year-old Spurs superstar.

However, 'The Big Fundamental' decided to turn down these offers and stay in San Antonio. Months later, he discussed the reasons for that decision in an interview with SLAM Magazine , pointing to a special teammate as a key factor.

"David [Robinson] is a big part of the reason I didn't go anywhere," Duncan remarked and later continued. "I love playing with David, and I think we have a chance to win another championship here."

The ‘Twin Towers’ shared a special bond

The San Antonio Spurs have landed the top pick in the NBA Draft thrice in their history, selecting a big man each time: David Robinson in 1987, Tim Duncan in 1997, and most recently, Victor Wembanyama in 2023.

The first two, now both Hall of Famers, even played together as teammates, showcasing unbelievable dominance. Dubbed the 'Twin Towers,' the dynamic duo of Robinson and Duncan became one of the league's most legendary frontcourt pairings and also marked a historic era for the Texas franchise.

Their partnership thrived, with both benefiting greatly from the other's presence. Vet center Robinson found renewed purpose later in his career, and the 1995 MVP winner was able to conserve valuable energy besides the young power forward Duncan. In turn, Timmy gained valuable wisdom from The Admiral's wealth of experience. Their on-court chemistry was exceptional, and their bond extended off the court as well.

    Duncan became a franchise icon

In just their second season together in 1998-99, 'The Twin Towers' led the Spurs to their first-ever franchise championship title. Unfortunately, the following postseason saw the team eliminated in the first round while 'The Big Fundamental' was sidelined with a knee injury. However, this setback did not discourage the 1998 ROY.

"We have a great opportunity with myself and David at the core of the team, and the fact that we have won it before," Duncan said after extending his contract, per the NY Times .

The decision to stay was influenced by additional factors, as Timmy stated in the SLAM article.

"I love the area," he stated and further emphasized. "I enjoy playing for Pops [Greg Popovich]. I love the way he motivates me, motivates the team, and the direction we are heading in."

The people in an organization and the overall environment can significantly impact players' desire to stay. This was also true for 'The Big Fundamental,' and his decision proved to be the right one in hindsight.

Teaming up with his cherished partner, the 10-time All-Star Robinson, they clinched another title in 2003. Following 'The Admiral's' retirement, Timmy continued the success alongside his long-time comrade Popovich. They went on to secure three more titles in 2005, 2007, and 2014, bringing Duncan's remarkable ring collection with the Spurs to five.
