Photo/Brian Smith Landrie Valenzuela, a Jacksboro High School senior and multi-sport athlete, has signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field for Angelo State University. Valenzuela, who threw the shot put and discus while at JHS, said the family-like feel of the school and having family close by was key in making the choice. “My mom grew up in Ballinger and still has family there, so it’s great to have family close by,” Valenzuela said. “The school felt like family, the track team as a whole felt like family.” She was considering McMurry University, Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M and some small out-of-state schools before making the decision. She plans on majoring in athletic training while at ASU. Va lenzuela said she will be competing in shot put at ASU but could add other things, as well. Girls track coach Steve Hooten said having signing ceremonies “has been a pretty good habit to have” of late, crediting Valenzuela as a “huge” part of the track team’s success over the last two years. “It’s been a tremendous journey of growth for her,” Hooten said. “It’s the fire that drives her and having her apply herself in such a way, there’s definitely more growth to come. It’s a joy to see her go on to the next level.” Assistant coach Cheryl Hubble said Valenzuela has earned everything she has received. “She has put in the work and I am so proud of her,” said Hubble, who has known Valenzuela since she was nine months old. Valenzuela also competed in basketball and powerlifting at JHS, qualifying for state all four years in high school in powerlifting.
