Monegan Road to close for a month
The City of Whitefish has contracted with Knife River to complete the reconstruction of a portion of Monegan Road from Voerman Road to JP Road. Monegan Road between Voerman Road and JP Road will be closed to thru traffic starting on Thursday, Oct. 16. The closure is anticipated to last approximately one month and will resume next summer. Knife River submitted the lowest responsible bid to the city, nearly $934,000, which was below the engineer’s estimate. This phase of the reconstruction includes earthwork, crushed aggregate placement, ditch regrading, culvert installation, guard rail installation and asphalt paving. Winter Weather Closes Section of Going-to-the-Sun Road
Glacier National Park officials on Oct. 4 closed the alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road as winter weather buffeted the scenic highway’s upper reaches over the weekend, blanketing the Logan Pass area in snow and rendering it impassable to motorists between Avalanche Creek on the west side and Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east.

The Blue Byrd Bus of Essex Route
For 42 years, Gerard Byrd left his home in Martin City at 6:30 a.m. and drove east on U.S. Highway 2 through Bad Rock and John F. Stevens canyons, threading a yellow school bus through the Middle Fork Flathead River corridor against the backdrop of Glacier National Park’s southern border. His most committing routes involved driving 186 miles per day as he navigated the narrow, two-late artery between Essex and Columbia Falls. But for the bulk of his career, Byrd’s daily route only spanned 164 miles, affording him the luxury of turning his 72-passenger Blue Bird around at Pinnacle near Glacier Haven Inn.

Lower the Speed Limit on 93
I drive U.S. Highway 93 between Happy Valley and Kalispell nearly every day. Over the past year, I have noticed that the accidents are becoming more frequent and are also more serious. The cars that have collided have done so with high speed judging by the way the cars are destroyed.

Whitefish drivers brace for blasting delays on US 93
Commuters on U.S. 93 west of Whitefish will have to press their luck next month as blasting work is expected to halt traffic for up to an hour each day. Beginning Friday, Oct. 3, drilling and rock blasting will take place on the U.S. 93 corridor near Spencer Lake between mile markers 130 and 131 and on Antler Ridge Road, according to a news release from the Montana Department of Transportation. The work will occur once per day between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., with closures lasting 30 to 60 minutes while crews blast and remove rock and conduct safety checks. The highway will reopen once debris is cleared and the area is deemed safe for motorists, officials said. Crews are expected to complete two to three blasts per week, with approximately five blasts total. “Safety is our top priority,” said Bob Vosen, Missoula District administrator for the transportation department. “These blasting operations are an important step in the realignment and reconstruction of U.S. 93. Glacier National Park reopens Sun Road to Logan Pass from east side
Glacier National Park announced it reopened the Going-to-the-Sun Road to Logan Pass from the east side Monday. The road closed down on Saturday due to snow and ice. The west side remains closed at Avalanche Creek. The alpine section of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road closed Saturday at 5 p.m. due to snow and ice at higher elevations, including Logan Pass. The Park Service also closed the Many Glacier Road as well due to winter conditions, but it reopened to the Many Glacier Hotel Sunday morning. Glacier’s high peaks were showing a topping of snow by Saturday afternoon from the wintry weather. The Sun Road typically closes over Logan Pass in mid-October anyway, as Glacier Park crews have to winterize the road and the visitor center. On the road, they have to take down numerous removable guardrails, or risk having them swept away by avalanches over the winter. At the visitor center, they board up the windows to keep them from being damaged by snow. With the government shutdown, people should expect minimal services in the park. The Two Medicine Road is also closed for construction, as contractors are replacing a deep culvert. This week conditions should improve, with high
