Ladies Service Club serving up huckleberry shakes at the fair for a good cause
It's mid-august in Northwest Montana, which can only mean one thing: fair week. At the Northwest Montana Fair, taking place Aug. 12 to 16, there will be prize-winning hogs, electrifying rodeo action, boot-stomping concerts and, of course, more fried food concentrated in one area than previously thought possible. This year, though, Bigfork residents will notice one substantial change: the famous Bigfork Ladies Service Club booth, which serves up huckleberry milkshakes and hamburgers to the fair's tens of thousands of visitors, will be painted purple instead of its traditional red. "We're really excited because they painted it the color of a huckleberry milkshake for us this year," club President Katy Kaestner said. "It needed a paint job, and they painted it purple, so it definitely stands out when you're walking down the food road." The booth's color is the only major change to the beloved food stop. The women of Ladies Service Club will still be hard at work whipping up the same products they've served since the booth first opened in 2013 to serve as the club's largest fundraiser of the year. All of the profits from fair week go back to the community in the form of donations to

Mystic Grindz Brews Up a Native-Owned Success Story in Ronan
RONAN — Behind the counter at Mystic Grindz, located at 63690 U.S. Highway 93, Brooke Wagner didn’t set out to become a business owner. A grant-funded office job ended, leaving her uncertain about what came next, so she picked up a part-time gig at a local coffee shop. What started as a barista position turned into a management role within months — and, a few years later, into a coffee shop of her own.

It’s buckin’ good: Cowgirl Coffee opens eighth location in Flathead Valley
Cowgirl Coffee, a drive-through coffee shop, has opened its eighth location in the Flathead Valley in downtown Columbia Falls. The coffee shop first opened in 2002 on Wisconsin Avenue in Whitefish. It now has locations in Whitefish, Columbia Falls and Kalispell. Shea Fast, the founder, is excited to announce that the newest location in Columbia Falls will have a walk-in option as well as a drive-through. “It’s going to kind of be a Cowgirl 2.0,” Fast said. The new shop will have a sit-down option as well as an extended food menu which she hopes will eventually include healthy, grab and go breakfast food as well as dirty soda drinks. Fast moved to Whitefish in 1995 from Utah after a visit to Whitefish Mountain Resort as a professional snowboarder for a photoshoot with a women’s focused magazine. “I really thought Whitefish was a cute little town,” she said. After an injury forced her to retire from the slopes, she revisited her love for espresso. “Coffee was kind of my thing,” she said. “I love starting businesses.” Fast never expected that she was going to expand the coffee shop so much. But when looking back, she states that she wishes that

Grouchy Grizzly serves up burgers, sliders and shareables
Whitefish’s newest restaurant opened its doors July 2, boasting the slogan “Eat. Drink. Growl.” Grouchy Grizzly -- open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily -- is in the space formerly occupied by Last Chair Kitchen & Bar on East Lakeshore Drive. The building was sold in the spring to Arizona-based restaurant group Square One Concepts. “It’s not comparable to our other places other than the food,” owner Barrett Rinzler said. “It’s smaller, it’s cozier. I think it plays well into where we are. Everywhere we go, we try to figure out how we can fit into the community. We like to think, what’s not here? “Our menu is pretty varied. I don’t think you’ll find this variety in other places,” Rinzler said. Menu selections include shareables, burgers and handhelds, sliders, “the mains,” “cub grub” and desserts. There’s a “big grizz burger challenge” with eight quarter-pound patties to be finished in 5 minutes for no charge. Sysco is their food purveyor, Rinzler said. He said he also hopes to source some meat and fish locally and to purchase local produce seasonally. The establishment saw a few renovations prior to opening. The warm-wood finishes remain a highlight in the building, but
