SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Buk Mawut Buk, the man who murdered Ute football player Aaron Lowe, has been sentenced to prison.

Buk Buk has been sentenced to 15 years to life for murder and three years to life for attempted murder in the Utah State Prison — consecutive with each other and consecutive with the time he is now serving.

Lowe was shot and killed in September 2021 during a house party near 2200 South Broadmoor Street in Sugar House. According to the District Attorney’s Office, an argument broke out between Lowe and some others, which escalated to Buk Buk shooting Lowe and a then-20-year-old woman.

“As both victims were lying injured on the ground, [Buk Buk] continued to shoot them,” the DA’s office said.

Lowe, who was a sophomore at the University of Utah and who played as a cornerback, died on the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for multiple injuries.

Following the shooting, Buk Buk fled the scene but was arrested in Draper in October 2021.

In March, Buk Buk pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of first-degree felony attempted murder.
