Fun in Faith series begins today: ‘It’s good family fun’

FAITH — Mark the calendars for lots of free fun entertainment taking place in Faith as the Fun in Faith Summer Concert Series and more is set to take off.

All of the events, which have been planned by the Fun in Faith Committee, will be held at the bandstand in the park in Faith, located behind the town hall. On the schedule throughout the remainder of the year are movie nights, various concerts, markets in the park, Frosty Fest and much more.

“We’ve got a lot of events,” said Dale Peeler, mayor pro tem of Faith and chairman of the Fun in Faith Committee.

This committee has “worked really hard,” he said, and shared that all this is done through local sponsors in town and around Salisbury.

Peeler said that they just started this last year, “so this is only the second time we’ve ever done this, but it’s grown.”

There will be five different movie nights, and all are invited to come and bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the movies. All movies, except for the Aug. 16 showing of “Dirty Dancing,” will begin at 7:45 p.m. This movie will have an added feature of a dance party with DJ Dana Grubb prior beginning at 6 p.m. with the movie to follow at 8 p.m. The community is invited to come dressed in ’60s costume and participate in the dance party and enjoy the movie.

Food trucks and Kona Ice will be on site for each movie as well. On the evenings that the bands perform, Peeler said that New Sarum would be setting up with food trucks. The only evening there would be no food trucks is the night of the oyster roast, he noted.

The first movie is scheduled to begin tonight, May 17, with the showing of the Disney movie “Encanto.” Other movie dates and titles include “The Goonies” on June 14, “Dirty Dancing” on Aug. 16, “The Blind Side” on Sep. 25, and “Hocus Pocus” on Oct. 25.

Multiple concerts are also planned as part of Fun in Faith beginning June 22 with the Street Dance featuring The Extraordinaires. It is scheduled for 7:30-10 p.m. on Main Street.

Faith’s National Night Out, set to honor first responders and teachers, will be held Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. with fun things for the kids to do, along with an antique fire truck on display and the Dueling Pianos at the bandstand beginning at 7 p.m.

The next big band night will be Sept. 7, also at 7:30 p.m., which will be the annual Faith Fire Department oyster roast and fish fry. This fundraising event will feature the Chairman of the Board in concert.

On Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., The Chain, a Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band, will be performing along with a cruise-in in the park that will also be held that night.

Additional features of the Fun in Faith will be weekly markets in the park, planned for Wednesdays from 5:30-8 p.m. and some Saturdays, Peeler said.

Frosty Fest is planned for Nov. 25. This is a good event, Peeler said, with a golf cart parade and more fun for all.

Something new the committee has added to the summer series this year is called “Show Your Faith,” and will be held once a month on Sundays from 6-8 p.m. Four churches have come together for these evenings, Peeler said, and the minister from each would take a night and speak and the other churches would take a night and provide music for the evening, which could include a praise band or trio from the church.

Participating churches and dates are July 21 with Pastor Mike Shoaf from Nazareth Community Church and music by Mount Hope Church, Aug. 18 with Pastor Johnny Boggs from Mount Hope Church and music by Nazareth Community Church, Sept. 15 with Pastor Stephen DeWalt from Faith Baptist Church and music provided by Shiloh Reformed Church, and Oct. 20 with Pastor Richard Myers with Shiloh Reformed Church.

On June 23, Peeler said an open mic night for Christian music has been planned, which would include a minister meet and greet time, with the hopes of having 15 to 20 different people to do an open mic. The only thing that those who are performing would need to do, he said, is sign up and bring their own CD or music. The sound system will be provided.

Peeler said that there has been so much change taking place in communities with lots of new people coming, “and you don’t have the outreach,” which is why he would encourage people to come to these events.

“There was a time and day when I knew every single person that lived in Faith growing up here,” he said, “and so this is an outreach to get out and meet people in the community and get everybody involved, and it’s good family fun.”
