Look Back ... to a Bronze Palm award for a Jacksonville Boy Scout, 1949
May 13, 1949, in The Star: Today marks the end of the 1948-49 school term for all Calhoun County public schools, which number 32 in total, with an enrollment of more than 9,000 students. The system employs 263 teachers. Also this date: Logan and Ladiga streets in Piedmont are at present badly torn up, but city leaders say it’s for a good reason: the installation of natural gas lines into the northern Calhoun County city, a project which began in February. It consists of a four-inch steel high-pressure pipe that extends from White Plains to the downtown section, a distance of 14 miles by way of the Nances Creek Valley. At least 60 percent of the city’s residents should be able to have the gas in their homes sometime during July; more than 700 meters for residential use have been ordered. Additionally: Ladiga District Negro Scouts held their May Court of Honor recently at Piedmont’s Bethune High School. The first Bronze Palm to be earned by a Choccolocco Council Negro Scout was given to Edward Caldwell Jr. of Troop 311 of Jacksonville, for six months service as an Eagle Scout, with at least five additional merit badges earned above the 21 required for Eagle rank. One of Caldwell’s badges was for chemistry.

Look Back ... to the day the Army band music died, 1999
May 14, 1949: The date fell on a Saturday during a 12-year period (1940-52) when The Star didn’t publish on that day of the week. May 14, 1999, in The Star: The 8 o’clock performance by the 14th Army Band tonight at Anniston High School auditorium will mark the end of an era that began 51 years ago at Fort Mead, Va. It will be the band’s last public performance before the fort closes Sept. 30. The band originated at Fort Mead in August 1948 as the world’s only all-female military band. When the Women’s Army Corps transferred to Fort McClellan in 1954, the band came with it, and it’s been here ever since. Men were integrated into the band in 1975. “It’s really sad. There’s a lot of history here,” said former band member John Risse. The band played at President Eisenhower’s second inaugural parade in 1957, at the World’s Fair in New York in 1964, the White House in 1967, for the Mike Douglas Show in 1968 and in 1969 at the Tournament of Roses Parade, in which the musicians marched.
