An elderly woman was found dead in her home, apparently killed in an early Tuesday fire, according to St. Peter law enforcement.

St. Peter Police Chief Matt Grochow told the St. Peter Herald that, "As a result of the fire, a person had been found deceased inside the residence, and that investigation continues. It was an adult elderly female."

Grochow noted that the fire, which took place inside a townhome in the Pratt Circle neighborhood at around 3 a.m. Tuesday, was likely accidental.

"It does appear to be accidental and not suspicious at this time, but we continue to investigate," he said.

The SPPD and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating. The body of the deceased was sent to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office for identification and investigation purposes.

No danger to the public is believed.

While damage from the fire was largely concealed from the outside of the residence, Grochow said, "I would venture to guess the majority has been destroyed."

The St. Peter Fire Department chief had not responded to a request for comment before the publishing of this article.
