Whoever says glam rock is dead hasn’t been to the St. Peter Oktoberfest. The big hair and even bigger sounds of the 80’s will be rocking the Nicollet County Fairgrounds as four classic rock bands have been scheduled to take the stage for the celebration’s 13th annual outing.

The St. Peter Ambassadors recently announced that Mankato-based cover band IV Play and 80s glam rock tribute band The Hype will be headlining Oktoberfest’s Friday Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 concerts respectively alongside openers Rough House and Rock of Ages.

Local favorite IV Play will be making full use of Oktoberfest’s large outdoor stage to deliver a mesmerizing showcase of rock, country and pop hits from the 80s and 90s to the present day. The band has made a name for themselves playing large events in Southern Minnesota as well as Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota and South Dakota.

“With their production and video boards and everything else, they put on the best cover band show of anyone in Southern Minnesota. They’re unbelievable,” said St. Peter Ambassador Cory Abels.

IV Play takes the stage at the 8:30 p.m. after a 7 p.m. performance by Rough House. Based out of western Wisconsin, Rough House may be best known in the local area opening shows for Minnesota arena rock band Hairball. Rough House will be bringing their renditions of classic rock hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s to the St. Peter stage.

On Saturday, The Hype will be making their first ever appearance at St. Peter Oktoberfest. With long hair and exaggerated flair, The Hype brings back the showmanship of the 80s with a five-concerts-in-one experience as they play the greatest hits of Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Poison and Bon Jovi back-to-back in one tribute performance after another.

“They might start off as Bon Jovi and they’ll sound like Bon Jovi and then they’ll quick change,” said Abels. “A minute and a half later, the drums and bass will still be playing the whole time, the guitar player and singer will come back on and then they’ll sound like Aerosmith.”

Abels said the St. Peter Ambassadors were excited to have the Hype playing Oktoberfest alongside opening act Rock of Ages. Made up of Jerry Derner, Dale Bjorklund, Dave Wirig and John Kujawa, the St. Peter-based band is returning to Oktoberfest to share a selection of rock songs throughout the ages.

In addition to the live concerts, community members can expect the return of many Oktoberfest staples including the chug run, Kidtoberfest parade, lederhosen and drindl contests, the stein holding competition, classic Bavarian folk tunes and much more.

If You Go On Friday and Saturday Sept. 27-28 Oktoberfest entry will be free from noon to 4 p.m. After 4 p.m. the event will cost $10 to enter.
