Congrats! South Dakota chefs named James Beard semifinalists
A married couple in South Dakota has been named a semifinalist for the 2026 James Beard restaurant and chef awards . Camillia Hjortnaes and Erik Hjortnaes, who run Hjem A.M. in Custer, South Dakota, were named semifinalists for the Best Chef: Midwest category. Committees within the James Beard Foundation will soon visit the semifinalist restaurants and decide which will be among the five finalists in each category, announced April 2. The foundation announces the winners during a ceremony on June 15 in Chicago. See a full list of semifinalists here: Meet the James Beard Foundation chef, restaurant semifinalists in 2026. Hjem A.M. is a brunch spot in downtown Custer that opened in 2022. The Hjortnaeses moved to the Black Hills to be closer to Cami's sister, Eliza Raney, whom with her husband, Joseph, owns Skogen Kitchen nearly on the same block. The Raneys have been two-time James Beard semifinalists in the past. After helping out the Raneys at Skogen for a few years, the Hjortnaeses started Hjem (meaning "home" in Norwegian) and taking with them some of Skogen's old brunch entrees. Today, guests can enjoy Sashimi deviled eggs, Norwegian chicken and waffles, maple seared salmon and homemade sausage patties. Looking

A variety of businesses are participating in Rapid City’s Restaurant Week, from breweries and coffee shops to pizzerias and restaurants.
