    Feature

St. Francis softball senior Kara Schwintek, who has helped the Saints surge to a 6-0 start to the season.

    Start in softball

“I started playing baseball at the age of 5. Long before playing, I was running around the field with my dad and brother. Sports were a part of my childhood growing up, with my brother playing and my dad coaching. I played pitcher and shortstop for 9 years before I considered softball. I transitioned to softball in my sophomore year of high school with the hope of continuing to play after high school and into college. I recently signed to Bethel University to continue my athletic and academic career.”

    Enjoy most about sport

“My favorite part about the sport are the bonds I created with teammates over the years.”

    Biggest challenge

“The most challenging part was recognizing the pitches and difference in spins in softball. My continued growth in this area is attributed to dedication, repetition and a lot of patience. I look forward to the challenges the next level brings.”

    Favorite part about position

“My favorite part about shortstop is the level of involvement the position brings — always moving and ready for anything.”

    Best part of team

“I enjoy the camaraderie and healthy competition.”

    Pregame superstitions

“No superstitions. I enjoy listening to my music before going out on the field.”

Something people might not realize about your sport

“Don’t EVER high-five a teammate after hitting a home run BEFORE crossing home plate. Lesson learned.”

    Top SF softball memory

“Last season, section final, getting blistered sun burnt, hitting a home run to tie the game, crossing home plate and getting slapped on my blistered shoulder by a teammate. Put me in tears. Note to self: Listen to my mom and wear sunscreen.”
